Learn More about Natural Disaster Emergency Response Safety

Emergency response follows natural disasters across the country. According to BLS data, 5,333 workers died on the job in 2019, about 100 per week or 15 workers each day. One in five of those workers (1,061) are construction related.

Proper planning before and during natural disaster emergency response should include risk mitigation strategies to reduce threats from the many and varied hazards that may be present. This creates unique challenges due to the infrastructure damages, lack of standard protections, competing priorities, and other potential problems for workers entering and exiting the damage areas.

This webinar is intended to raise awareness about natural disaster emergency response occupational safety and health exposures. Safety and health risks that can harm workers and businesses are often overlooked. Efforts to reduce these hazards typically only come to light after a natural disaster has occurred and are combined with the necessity to restore life sustaining systems and the need to return stability to an affected area. Due to the nature of the natural disaster, many workers may not be familiar with the area or pre-accident condition that existed which complicates the responses and recovery risk and safety.
